The Dark Mod

Posted by peter on 2006-12-28 Also filed under Cool Website, General and Video Games

If you are a gamer and you haven’t already, you should really check out The Dark Mod. The Dark Mod is a Doom 3 total conversion that looks to emulate the “Thief” game series, creating a Thief-like game experience without stepping on anyone’s copyrights. When finished it will include rich features for player created […]

Wii have Linux?

Posted by peter on 2006-11-22 Also filed under Cool Website, Freeware, General, Linux, Tech News and Wii

That was quick, someone is already developing a Linux distribution for the Nintendo Wii. It sounds like it is based off of Gamecube Linux, which makes sense since much of the Wii’s technology is built off of the existing Gamecube tech. Should be interesting too see what happens with this.

Grid computing for the masses

Posted by peter on 2006-10-25 Also filed under General and Programming

I just found this neat project on Source Forge:
Alchemi is an open source software framework that allows you to painlessly aggregate the computing power of networked machines into a virtual supercomputer (desktop grid) and to develop applications to run on the grid.
Of course even if you are able to come up with a project that […]

Posted by peter on 2006-09-28 Also filed under Freeware and General

That’s right, Electric Sheep is a open-source screen saver that shares patterns over a peer-to-peer network. These “sheep” are voted upon by Electric Sheep users and the most popular ones “breed” with each other spawning all new “sheep”. Kind of interesting huh?

Avoiding faux-anti-spyware

Posted by peter on 2006-09-05 Also filed under Cool Website, General and Security

It’s an unfortunate fact that there are a lot of programs out there that pretend to be reputable anti-spyware programs but in reality are themselves malware. Some of them simply give you false-positives and/or inflated estimates of the threats they “found” in your computer and then try to pressure you to buy their product […]

Gir2007 has made some great music and funny videos on his site. I personally really like the “Pancakes” video. Gir2007’s music has peaked my interest in Propellerhead Software’s Reason. I think I would really enjoy their software, unfortunately it will probably be more than a decade before I have enough extra […]

URIA, a project to keep an eye on

Posted by peter on 2006-07-11 Also filed under Freeware, General and Web Design and Development

UIRA (UIRA Isn’t a Recursive Acronym) looks like it will be a great project if it continues. It is an open-source Flash IDE that is currently in development (it also will produce SVG files too). There are binaries you can download, but the current version, version 0.0.1b doesn’t do anything (literally, if […]
